We’ve provided a list below so that you can be informed about proper care of your sink.
Tips to Keep your Sink & Drain in Good Shape
- DIY: If you have trouble cleaning off lime deposits from mineral-rich hard water, try using vinegar. This is a holy grail item. Soak a paper towel in vinegar and wrap the towel around the spotted area. After ten minutes, buff the spot with a dry paper towel. Do not try this on brass or colored fixtures; this may discolor them. Lemon juice works wonders for stained sinks. This will work on porcelain enamel, stainless steel, or any other material.
- Keep the drain Clog-free: This one is obvious but many people are not sure how to accomplish this. Mix 1 cup of baking soda with 1 cup of salt and ¼ cup cream of tartar. Keep in an airtight childproof container. Every few weeks, pour ½ cup of the mixture down each drain, followed by a quart of boiling water. Of course, do you best to avoid dropping things down the drain such as hair, grease, food and debris.
- Protect your sink from scratches, stains and damage: Replacing a sink is expensive. Be sure to keep fruit, vinegar, salad dressing or other acidic foods off of the surface of a porcelain enamel sink. Long-term exposure to acids can cause staining and could etch the surface. Be sure never to use scouring powders to clean your sink. Use warm water and dish detergent instead.
